Music, Movement, and Community at the Unified5K

A Day to Remember at the Unified5K in Dexter, MI

On Saturday, August 23, 2025, I had the honor of DJing at the Unified5K in Dexter, Michigan, hosted by AdaptX and led by their executive director, Brendan Aylward. This event was all about inclusion, community, and celebrating movement—and I’m so glad I got to be part of it.

It was my first time visiting Dexter, MI, and the energy of the crowd made it unforgettable.

Spinning for a Purpose

As DJ Tony J, I set the vibe for the morning by bringing music that kept spirits high and people moving. There’s something powerful about combining fitness and music—both create connection, and at the Unified5K, that connection was on full display.

The runners, walkers, and adaptive athletes came together in an atmosphere filled with encouragement and positivity. My job was simple: keep the beats flowing and the motivation alive.

From the Podcast to the Unified5K

My connection to AdaptX actually started before this race. I’ve been a guest twice on the AdaptX Podcast, where I had the chance to share my story and talk about adaptive fitness. That’s where I first met Brendan Aylward and learned about his powerful mission to expand inclusive opportunities through adaptive sports.

Being invited to DJ the Unified5K felt like a natural extension of that connection. It was amazing to take what started as a conversation on the podcast and bring it into real life, surrounded by a community moving together with the same spirit of inclusion.

Supporting the Mission

What I love most about events like this is the mission behind them. AdaptX is dedicated to creating inclusive opportunities through adaptive sports and programs that open doors for people of all abilities.

Being able to support that mission—by sharing music, energy, and a little piece of my story—was a true honor. I also had the chance to share my books, bookmarks, and stickers with participants, spreading more of the #UNBREAKABLE message.

Family and Community

I wasn’t alone at the event—my wife, Teemaree, joined me to cheer on the racers and support the community. Together, we got to meet so many amazing people and see first-hand the impact of events like this.

The turnout was fantastic, with people of all abilities showing up to move, support one another, and celebrate.

Looking Ahead

This was my very first time in Dexter, MI, and I left with so much gratitude. Big thanks to Brendan Aylward and the AdaptX team for inviting me to be part of this special day.

I’m looking forward to future events where music, movement, and adaptive fitness can come together to celebrate inclusion and strength.

Why This Day Mattered

The Unified5K was more than just a race—it was proof of what happens when people come together to support each other, move their bodies, and share joy.

I’m proud to have played a part in it, and I can’t wait for what’s next.
