Inside the 2024 OIF National Conference: Fitness for O.I., DJing, and Building Community

This past July, I had the privilege of attending the Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation (OIF) National Conference in Omaha, Nebraska—the largest event in the world that supports the O.I. community. As a first-time attendee, I didn’t fully know what to expect, but the experience was nothing short of life-changing.

Not only was I honored to attend, but I was also thrilled to play an active role in the conference by DJing, leading discussions, and hosting the powerful Fitness for O.I. session. The conference gave me a chance to connect with so many fellow O.I.ers, share my book, and further my commitment to this incredible community.

A Gathering Like No Other

The OIF National Conference isn’t just an event—it’s a homecoming. For those of us in the O.I. community, it’s a chance to gather with people who understand our experiences firsthand, celebrate our shared resilience, and build connections that last far beyond the conference itself.

As someone living with Osteogenesis Imperfecta, becoming a part of this event meant stepping into a space filled with unconditional love and support. Being surrounded by others who truly understand what it means to live with O.I. was uplifting, inspiring, and deeply validating.

My Role at the Conference

When the OIF asked me to participate, I jumped at the opportunity to contribute in multiple ways. The chance to combine my passions—fitness, music, and public speaking—was a dream come true. Here’s a quick rundown of my involvement:

  • DJing: I had the absolute pleasure of keeping the energy up at the event with music. Whether it was during the Walk-N-Wheel event or the Sunday night closing session and ceremony, spinning tunes and seeing smiles on faces made my heart full.
  • Panel Discussions: I sat on multiple panels where I shared my experiences and perspectives, connecting with others over topics that matter deeply to our community.
  • Morning Workout: I even led a morning fitness session to get people moving and energized!

Each role allowed me to connect with the community in a different way, and I’m so grateful for the opportunity to lend my abilities to the conference.

The Fitness for O.I. Session: A Game-Changer

One of the highlights of the conference for me was leading the Fitness for O.I. session. This session was special because fitness within the O.I. community is still a relatively new and evolving conversation. Seeing such a large and enthusiastic turnout for the session was beyond encouraging—it showed just how hungry the community is for resources, support, and empowerment in this area.

The session wasn’t just informative; it was interactive and packed with positive energy. We covered a range of topics, including:

  • How to get started with fitness, no matter your current situation.
  • Tips for moving after an injury.
  • Finding adaptive fitness options that work for your unique needs.

We laughed, shared ideas, and had meaningful discussions. At one point, I reminded the group:

“We’ve spent so much time moving to protect our bodies, but now it’s time to move to strengthen our bodies.”

That simple mindset shift sparked so many lightbulb moments for attendees, and it felt amazing to see people leave the session feeling inspired and empowered.

Sharing My Book: Disable Your Disability

Another highlight of the conference was sharing my book, Disable Your Disability, with the community. This book tells my personal story of living with O.I. and embarking on a fitness journey that changed my life.

Connecting with readers face-to-face and signing so many copies of my book was an incredible experience. It was humbling to hear how my story has already inspired others to take steps toward their own fitness and wellness goals.

Meeting My O.I. Family

For years, I’ve connected with many O.I.ers online, but meeting them in person at the conference felt like a family reunion. One of the most special moments was getting together with members of the monthly online #OILife Group, which I’ve been leading on Zoom. Seeing familiar faces in person and sharing hugs was truly heartwarming.

The O.I. community is special because it’s built on a foundation of love, understanding, and mutual support. Not only do I receive so much from this community, but I’m also honored to give back and help others on their journeys.

Key Lessons and Takeaways

As a participant in the conference, I learned just how strong the O.I. community is. People are ready to work together, share ideas, and create a brighter future for everyone affected by Osteogenesis Imperfecta.

As a community leader, I discovered new ways to provide impactful leadership. I left inspired to keep building spaces, resources, and opportunities for connection through my #UNBREAKABLE brand and #OILife initiatives.

The conference reminded me of an essential truth:

No one in this community is alone. We are #UNBREAKABLE TOGETHER.

How You Can Get Involved

If you’re part of the O.I. community or want to support it, there are so many ways to get involved. I encourage you to:

Let’s continue to build this amazing community together, one step, one connection, and one empowering moment at a time.

Final Thoughts

Attending the OIF National Conference was more than just an event for me—it was a milestone in my O.I. journey and a celebration of what’s possible when we come together as a community. I’m already looking forward to the next one and to continuing the work we started in Omaha.

To all my fellow O.I.ers: thank you for being part of this journey. Remember, you’re never alone. Together, we are truly #UNBREAKABLE.
