My Appearance on True Disabled Story with Nico Meyering

I’m thrilled to share that I recently had the pleasure of appearing on Nico’s YouTube series, True Disabled Story! This series is dedicated to highlighting the diverse and dynamic experiences of people within the disability community, and I’m honored to be a part of it. In this episode, we talked about my journey with Osteogenesis Imperfecta (O.I.), also known as brittle bone disease.

A Glimpse Into Our Conversation

In our conversation, we discussed my early diagnosis and the challenges I faced growing up. For those unfamiliar with Osteogenesis Imperfecta, it’s a genetic disorder characterized by bones that break easily, often from little or no apparent cause. My diagnosis came when I was just 16 months old after experiencing several fractures. This was a surprise to my family, as there was no prior history of O.I., making me a spontaneous mutation of the condition. Growing up with frequent fractures meant I spent a significant amount of my childhood in a wheelchair and away from school and friends, leading to a sense of isolation and loneliness.

Despite these challenges, I learned to cultivate my imagination and develop a resilient mindset. The constant state of being physically broken was difficult, but it also taught me valuable lessons in perseverance and creativity. During our discussion, I shared insights from my experiences and how these early challenges shaped who I am today.

The Journey to Resilience and Advocacy

One of the key themes of our conversation was resilience. Living with O.I. has undoubtedly presented its fair share of obstacles, but it has also provided me with unique opportunities for growth and advocacy. Throughout my life, I have embraced the philosophy of being #UNBREAKABLE, which means more than just enduring physical challenges. It’s about cultivating a mindset of resilience, positivity, and determination.

I shared with Nico how this philosophy is central to my work as a disability advocate and fitness coach. My first book, “Disable Your Disability: Live the Healthy Life You Deserve,” is a testament to this. In it, I share my journey of getting and staying healthy despite my limitations. The book offers practical tips and motivational insights aimed at helping others achieve their health and wellness goals. It’s a guide for anyone who wants to take control of their health and live a fulfilling life, regardless of their physical limitations.

Introducing “Advice to Be #UNBREAKABLE”

During our conversation, we touched on some of the key principles from my new book, “Advice to Be #UNBREAKABLE.” One of the main messages is the importance of viewing disability as just one part of a person’s identity. Embracing the disability, rather than denying it, allows for a fuller and more fulfilling life. It’s crucial to understand and accept the feelings associated with the disability and to incorporate them into one’s life in a balanced manner.

I emphasized the significance of finding a middle ground where the disability is acknowledged but not the sole focus. This balance is essential for personal growth and resilience. Encouraging children with O.I. to experiment and explore their abilities can lead to greater success and a richer life experience.
