Stay ready!

A wise man once said, “If you stay ready, you ain’t got to get ready!”

This wise man’s name is Suga Free, a west coast emcee/rapper, and this is a song title from his first, and classic album, Street Gospel released in 1997!

Who would have thought that this song title, this idea, would strike so many deep down and become a phrase and idea that gets repeated by the likes of RuPaul and Will Smith! Those are just the two biggest names you might know, but there are countless others who have adopted this powerful idea!

“If you stay ready, you ain’t got to get ready!”

Now me, Tony Jacobsen, your motivational DJ, guru of good vibes, and author of Disable Your Disability, is diving deeper into this idea.

And as I’ve been developing new ways to be #UNBREAKABLE, I’ve found that there is so much gold within this phrase, that I wanted to build on it and give it even more context as it relates to our lives. And create actual steps to getting it done!

If we’re in a constant state of unpreparedness, we’re vulnerable. We’re weak. We’re tired.

We let down our guard, lose our strength, and we give up our power!

So… If you stay ready, you ain’t got to get ready.

And here’s how you do it!

YOU MUST BUILD AN AWARENESS OF ANTICIPATION.

Can you anticipate a situation before it happens? Of course, we cannot predict the future, we can’t read minds, and most of us don’t have a crystal ball. But if we really look at the situations that happen in our lives, and we look back at some, many of us will say, “Well, I knew that was going to happen”, or maybe you thought, “Gosh, I didn’t expect THAT to happen!”.

ut the truth is, we can instinctively guess more often than not how a situation is going to unfold.

It’s our gut feeling.

It’s our logical mind.

It’s connecting with our feeling and emotion and thinking through them to get, stay, and be ready!

And it’s all part of building awareness of anticipation! You have to master this skill to recognize patterns in your life.

“But what about things that I actually didn’t have any idea about?”, that’s cool, but you have to immediately take what you’ve learned from that and establish the ability to anticipate it in the future!

YOU HAVE TO BE AGILE IN ORDER TO STAY READY!

Situations in life will not always go to plan or the exact way you want or need them to go. We’ve all experienced this!

I remember when I started exercising. When I hired a personal trainer and I knew that I was going into this with a physical disability, I had already had years of building anticipation to situations when it came to movement and my brittle bones.

So when I started to get into the exercises, my trainer would instruct me to do the movements in a particular way and I would immediately stop myself, because I knew what that movement would do to me. Something as simple as stepping up onto a step. Or even doing a lunge motion. Both were already established in my mind as ‘moves I don’t do because I just might break something!’

But here’s where the magic of being agile in order to stay ready appears!

Once my trainer took me through these movements in the proper way, showed me how to do them safely, and once I started building strength in my legs, I was able to see firsthand that these moves were effective and actually helpful for me!

What this taught me was that I needed to be agile in any and every situation so as not to cut myself off from learning and experiencing something magical in my life!

There are a variety of possibilities in every situation, so stay open to them.

So I stay ready, by being agile! And you can too!

QUESTION, ARE YOU REACTING OR RESPONDING?

Knowing the difference between these two is critical in staying ready!

It’s the foundation of it!

The basics are this…

“Reacting” to a situation is when you come at it from an emotional stance.

“Responding” to a situation is when you come at it from a mixture of emotion and logical stance.

This idea of responding is what will develop as we start to build up our awareness of anticipation. J

So let’s answer the question? Are we reacting or responding?

An easy way to figure it out is by looking at the current emotional output and outcome of a situation.

Are you seeing that anger or fear is driving your actions? Are they dictating the outcomes?

If so, you just might be reacting and not responding.

This takes a great deal of emotional intelligence and connection to your inner self, so continue asking yourself “how am dealing with situations? Am I reacting or responding?”

When your answer starts to be more ‘I’m responding,” then you know you’re staying ready and not having to get ready!

A quick intro to everything Tony...

Tony is the author of Disable Your Disability, a book about learning how to live the healthy life you deserve despite your physical limitations. He was born with Osteogenesis Imperfecta (brittle bones) and has endured 70+ fractures throughout his life. At the ripe young age of 42, he had to embrace his disability to save his life, so against all odds, pushed himself through an 8-month physical transformation that ended up being just as important mentally and emotionally.

Tony also loves music. He’s been an emcee and DJ since the mid-80’s and has DJ’d professionally since 1996 (and continues to do so!). He’s created and released independent hip hop music, and found most of his success when he and his wife, Teemaree, released 3 albums as Dynamite Jive in the early 2000’s.

In addition to all this, Tony has worked professionally in the television/film industry since 2001, and created his own company, Egg Sandwich Media, to work as a one-man-production-band; wearing the hat of Producer all the way to Video Editor.

He currently lives in Detroit, MI with his wife and they enjoy their empty-nester life in the desert.
