Build Consistent Habits
Having consistency. I’m consistently talking about it! That’s because it’s important! But I get it, it’s not easy to do. So let me tell you how to build consistent habits slowly so they can turn into actions that are second nature.
LET’S GET INTO IT!
Change Up Your Style
First, ya gotta change up your style!
Many of us are always trying to change too many things all at once! We attempt to change habits or create habits all at once!
You know what I’m talking about… like on January 1st… “I’m gonna get healthy! I’ll start by working out every day. gonna work out every day. I’m never gonna eat french fries again! I’ll meditate, read positive quotes, and look at my vision board every single minute of the day. This years gonna be different!”
And what happens on February 1st? That’s right, we’re usually right back where we were on January 1st.
This is because we overwhelmed our system.
It’s great to have all these desires, and usually, they’re all relevant to our lives, but how do we set ourselves up to really get to where we want to be?
Gotta change the style up! How do we do that? PICK JUST ONE habit to build that you can focus on because this will alleviate the overwhelm in your system and be much easier to build!
Be Specific With The Habit
Next, you have to be specific with the habit you want to build.
This goes back to creating SMART goals, and even in the micro of building consistent habits, you gotta be SMART about it and that starts with the S – specificity!
You can’t just say, I want to be healthier! You have to be specific about the habit and actions that are going to create a healthier lifestyle; I will work out 3 times per week – Monday, Weds, and Friday – for 1 hour/per session. That’s pretty dang specific!
Doing this will take the guesswork out. You won’t have to think about “when will I work out? How long will I work out? What days?”
You’ll already have all the specifics figured out!
Pair Habits Together
And then you have to pair it up with another habit you already do!
Me, I drink coffee every single day. It’s a habit now, whether I like it or not. Honestly, coffee is life, I love it. But that’s neither here nor there. The bottom line is… it’s a habit that I do pretty much subconsciously now.
So, for me to create a new habit, I pair it up with my cup of coffee!
If I want to read the Bible every day. I do right after I pour my cup of coffee. I want to work out every day. That’s right, do it right after my cup of coffee! Which by the way is a great pre-workout!
So you get it, pair the new habit up with a current habit and the new one will get ingrained sooner than you think!
