They said it can’t be done. That’s why I did it!
During the month of October in 2020, I set out to challenge myself in the area of content creation. I went on a mission to create one video per day during the month to release on my YouTube channel.
Now, here’s the thing. I don’t have just ONE YouTube channel, I have TWO. So that meant creating 2 videos per day; one for each channel.
62 VIDEOS IN 31 DAYS!
Could I do it? That’s what I set out to find out when October 1st hit.
WHY WOULD I TAKE ON THIS CHALLENGE?
So this was a multi-fold challenge that I was embarking on:
- To boost the amount of content on each of the channels
- Boost subscriber counts on both channels
- Test my limits as a video producer/creator
- Do something brand new for myself as a creator
- Share as much valuable content as I could in 31 days with both of my audiences
I hadn’t planned on doing this challenge. In fact, it wasn’t until the last week of September that it hit me. I didn’t have too much time to prepare. But, as you’ll read below, sometimes it’s best to just dive in!
A SHORT HISTORY OF MY YOUTUBE JOURNEY
A little background on my YouTube history… I had one channel I had created when YouTube started. It was called, “tonyjworld” and it was simply a place to upload fun videos about… whatever. There was no goal or focus when I started the channel.
Fast forward a few years and I wrote and released Disable Your Disability. I created a 2nd channel to be the brand channel for the book and be a place where I could release videos that focused on topics of disability and getting healthy.
Fast forward again to 2019. I was going to attend Vidsummit so I started to examine my content and the focus on what I wanted to do on YouTube.
During the time between the release of the book and 2019, I had created a great deal of content on the Disable Your Disability channel and I even moved towards focusing on my disability specifically.
I knew I wanted to stay focused on the content based on disability because my engagement was going up and more and more people were enjoying the videos, but I did have a desire to dive further into self-development and life-changing guidance. I also knew that I would be writing more books and wanted to make sure there was a house for all of the topics I would be covering in the future.
The week before Vidsummit, I made the choice to split my channel and create two brand new channels!
The Disable Your Disability channel became #OILife and my tonyjworld channel became the #UNBREAKABLE Academy.
ON WITH THE CHALLENGE!
First was my #OILife channel. This channel is dedicated to focusing on everything related to my disability, Osteogenesis Imperfecta (Brittle Bones). It’s super niche and focused and it’s been growing exponentially since I made the split.
When it came to this challenge, I had been creating videos for this channel for a long time, and I had a list of topics that I knew I wanted to cover. I didn’t have 31, but I was confident that ideas would come to me as I went through the month.
The #UNBREAKABLE Academy was a different story. I had to get back to basics to generate the content for this channel. Nobody knew what the channel was. I didn’t even really know. I had an idea of what I wanted to focus on, but I didn’t have a clear cut theme yet. This 31 day challenge was exactly what I needed to get the ball rolling in the right direction.
HOW DID I DO IT?
I had batch produced a few videos for the #OILife channel so I had a few in the bank. I had nothing for the #UNBREAKABLE Academy. So I had to make a choice. Was I going to batch produce (which means I created multiple videos in a short amount of time and upload and schedule to release) or was I going to utilize the ‘live stream’ option?
I went down both paths.
I started it out with some batched videos and then I set up to do live streams.
Live streaming is incredibly fun! I’ve done a ton of live performances throughout my life and entertainment career as a DJ, emcee, actor and speaker, so this format suits me perfectly. I love the energy of being live and creating off the cuff.
I also took a few days to batch create some of the content. This helped me beef up my self-production skills. Everything from filming to editing and handling the uploads and all the added post-production required when working on YouTube.
Utilizing both methods to create content throughout the month was eye-opening to my production processes.
I ALMOST DIDN’T MAKE IT!
Coming into the 4th week of the challenge, I was starting to feel very much challenged. I was growing tired of having to stick to the daily commitment of creating the videos. I was physically tired because I was also working (as a video editor) and working out (doing 10 Rounds on BeachBody on Demand) every day. There was a few things weighing on me, but I was determined to complete the challenge!
And I did it!
I successfully created and released 62 videos in 31 days!!!
My final two videos were on Halloween. I wore a pumpkin shirt. It was pretty funny.
WHAT DID I LEARN FROM THIS CHALLENGE?
I learned that I could confidently create quality content quickly! (Say THAT 10 times fast!)
I learned that a YouTube channel WILL GROW as long as you stay consistent.
I learned that I have a true passion for sharing my message via video.
I learned that YouTube is a tricky platform to figure out and master, but also a fantastic platform to build your channel on and get your message out to the world.
And the lessons keep on coming.
2021 will bring more content for both channels, so be sure to subscribe to both and be a part of the growth!
My goal is to achieve 1,000+ subscribers on both of the channels. Again, subscribe and please share wherever you feel your friends would benefit.
